TWO Specsavers businesses have their sights set on a bright future for aspiring ‘Michael Jordans’ in Bexley.
Specsavers Bexleyheath and Specsavers Erith have partnered with Bexley Tigers Basketball Club to fund its Hardship Fund – an initiative designed to ensure that no young person is excluded from basketball due to financial challenges.
The support from Specsavers Bexleyheath and Erith will help break down financial barriers for families across the community, covering the costs of club membership, training sessions, and competition fees. As part of the partnership, Specsavers Bexleyheath has also donated 300 branded water bottles to help keep players hydrated during training and matches.
Wouter De Wit, Retail Director at Specsavers Bexleyheath and Specsavers Erith, says: ‘As a local owned and run business, we see every day how important it is for children to have access to opportunities that support their growth and confidence.
‘At Specsavers, we are committed to supporting children’s health and wellbeing while removing barriers to essential care and this partnership with Bexley Tigers reflects that commitment. It’s about creating inclusive spaces where young people can thrive, on and off the court, and we’re proud to stand alongside a club that shares our values.’
Bexley Tigers, a recognised Children’s University Learning Destination, continues to build positive pathways for local youth through sport, leadership and mentorship. The club’s ethos aligns strongly with Specsavers’ focus on early intervention in children’s vision and hearing, which are both vital to success in sport and beyond.
Nina Rickman, Head of Operations at Bexley Tigers Basketball Club, says: ‘We extend our sincere thanks to Specsavers Bexleyheath and Specsavers Erith for their generous support and shared belief that every child deserves the chance to thrive.
‘For us, basketball is more than just a game – it’s a lifeline, offering children a chance to build confidence, stay active and develop lifelong skills in a safe, supportive environment. Together, we are taking another step toward making basketball in Bexley accessible to all.’
Specsavers also offer a wide range of services for young people, including NHS-funded eye tests and glasses, free UV protection on all children’s eyewear, prescription sports glasses, and myopia control lenses to help prevent short-sightedness in children aged 6–16.
