Bexley Tigers was honoured to be invited to Leigh Academy Bexley’s Careers Fair, where we had the opportunity to engage with Year 10, 11, 12, and 13 students, sharing insights into the many career pathways within basketball. While basketball is often associated primarily with playing and coaching, our visit aimed to broaden students’ understanding of the wide range of professional roles available in the sport.
Beyond the Game: Careers in Basketball
As a community-driven basketball club, Bexley Tigers primarily focuses on playing and coaching basketball, but the sport offers a variety of career opportunities beyond the court. During the Careers Fair, we highlighted the different industries and professions that contribute to the basketball ecosystem, including:
- Operations & Management – The logistical and administrative side of running a basketball club or league.
- Legal & Governance – Overseeing contracts, compliance, and governance within sports organisations.
- Media & Broadcasting – Covering basketball through journalism, commentary, and digital content creation.
- Marketing & Sponsorship – Promoting teams, events, and players through brand partnerships and advertising.
- Administration & Finance – Managing club finances, membership coordination, and event planning.
- Medical & Performance – Careers in sports medicine, physiotherapy, strength and conditioning, and sports science.
- Finance & Accounting – Managing club budgets, managing sponsorship deals, overseeing salary structures, and handling financial planning for clubs and players.
- Technology & Data Analytics – Using advanced data analysis, performance tracking, and AI-driven scouting to improve player development and team strategy.
- Manufacturing & Retail – Careers related to designing and producing basketballs, sportswear, and footwear for brands like Timeline Athlete.
- Education & Community Development – Running grassroots programmes, coaching certifications, and initiatives that promote social impact through basketball.
By showcasing these various career pathways, we aimed to inspire students to consider roles within basketball that align with their interests and skills, whether they aspire to be on the court or work behind the scenes.
A Growing Basketball Landscape in Bexley
During our visit, we also took the opportunity to introduce students to Bexley Tigers and the opportunities we provide within the borough. As the biggest Basketball England-affiliated club in Bexley, we are committed to developing basketball at all levels through our youth programmes, school partnerships, and player development pathways.
We also spoke about how our club’s growth has created various career opportunities, from coaching and officiating to roles in club operations, event management, and digital media. For students interested in gaining hands-on experience, we discussed potential volunteering and work placement opportunities within Bexley Tigers, helping young people develop essential skills in sports management and leadership.
