Bexley Borough School Basketball Association (BBSBA)

“The Bexley Borough School Basketball Association connects schools across the London Borough of Bexley to foster basketball excellence, increase physical activity, and develop valuable life skills for students.“

Who We Are
The Bexley Borough School Basketball Association (BBSBA) is a collaborative initiative aimed at empowering youth in the London Borough of Bexley through the game of basketball. In partnership with the Bexley Tigers Basketball Club and its charitable arm, Tigers Basketball CIC, we connect schools across the borough to create opportunities for competition, skill development, and community engagement.
Our mission is to foster a love for basketball, increase physical activity, and equip students with valuable life skills that go beyond the court. Whether it’s through playing in our leagues, learning to officiate, or gaining experience in media and operations, the BBSBA provides a platform for young people to thrive.
What We Do
At the heart of the BBSBA is the Bexley School Basketball League, which includes competitive and recreational divisions for primary and secondary schools. We also host a Pan-Disability League, ensuring students of all abilities have a chance to participate and shine.
Beyond basketball, the association offers students the chance to upskill in areas like refereeing, coaching, marketing, and event management. By combining sports with real-world work experience, we aim to prepare students for success both in basketball and in life.
Our Vision
We envision a community where basketball serves as a tool to bring people together, improve health and well-being, and inspire the next generation of leaders. Through our inclusive programs and collaborative approach, we aim to raise the standard of basketball in Bexley while making a lasting impact on our youth.
Primary School League
The Primary School League is designed to introduce young students to the excitement and benefits of basketball in a structured and inclusive environment. Aimed predominantly at Year 5 and Year 6 students, this league provides an early opportunity to learn the fundamentals of the game, develop teamwork skills, and build confidence both on and off the court.
The league offers three distinct divisions to cater to different interests and skill levels, ensuring every child has a place to participate and thrive:
Division 1 Boys League:

- A competitive league exclusively for boys, showcasing advanced skills and team play.
Division 1 Girls League:

- A competitive league exclusively for girls, providing a platform to nurture talent and foster growth in girls’ basketball.
Division 2 Mixed League

- A co-ed division where boys and girls compete together in a fun and supportive environment.
- Focused on introducing basketball to younger students and encouraging participation.
Secondary School League
The Secondary School League provides an engaging and competitive platform for students to enhance their basketball skills, represent their schools, and grow as individuals. Open to all secondary school students in the London Borough of Bexley, this league is structured to cater to players of all abilities, from beginners to advanced athletes.
With a focus on inclusivity and progression, the league offers distinct divisions to ensure every student has a place to participate, learn, and excel:
Division 1 Boys League:

- A highly competitive league for boys, aimed at students with a strong understanding of basketball and a drive to compete at a higher level.
Division 1 Girls League:

- A competitive league for girls with advanced skills, fostering high-level gameplay and teamwork.
Division 2 Boys League:

- A recreational league for boys, tailored for beginners and focused on learning the game in a relaxed setting with simplified rules.
Division 2 Girls League

Pan-Disability School League
The Pan-Disability School League is a groundbreaking initiative designed to ensure that basketball is accessible to all students, regardless of ability. This league offers a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where students with disabilities can experience the joy of basketball, build confidence, and develop new skills.
The Pan-Disability School League is divided into two specialised divisions to cater to different needs:
Wheelchair Division 1:

- Designed for students who use wheelchairs, this division provides an exciting opportunity to participate in basketball with tailored rules and equipment.
- Focused on fun, teamwork, and promoting physical activity in a welcoming environment.
Learning Disability Division 1:

- Created for students with learning disabilities, this division ensures that basketball is both enjoyable and accessible.
- Emphasises inclusivity, personal achievement, and fostering a sense of belonging through recreational play.
2023 MBA Division 1 Championship
Basketball has a very long history in England, being introduced there by YMCA almost immediately after it was invented (having been created by the Canadian Dr. James Naismith in 1891 in Massachusetts). World Wars I and II further spurred its popularity.
The elite league is the fully professional British Basketball League, featuring teams from England and Scotland, while the semi-professional National Basketball League effectively forms the second-tier. There is no promotion and relegation between the two leagues because the BBL operates a franchise system whereby teams have to “buy into” the league.
